Aubusson carpet

What Is an Aubusson Carpet?

There are many different types of beautiful carpets. We’ve talked previously about practical carpets, craft carpets, and antique rugs, and we’ve explored what makes them different in both use and value. Over time, carpet artisans have refined their craft to the point where rugs are not just functional—they are true works of art. One example of this is the Aubusson carpet. But what exactly is an Aubusson carpet, and why is it considered such a treasure?

Aubusson Carpets and French Nobility

In addition to carpet enthusiasts, readers of history, design, and literature about wealthy households may recognize the name. Aubusson carpets were once the preferred floor coverings of the French nobility and, later, the very wealthy. Before the French Revolution, France operated under a strict social hierarchy where status was defined by privilege. In 1627, the Hospice de la Savonnerie was established by royal order to produce knotted pile carpets for the kings and queens of France. These carpets were used in royal residences and often given as diplomatic gifts.

The Origins of Aubusson Weaving

Naturally, carpets reserved for royalty became highly prized. Members of the French nobility wanted similar quality for their own homes, which led to the establishment of workshops in the villages of Aubusson and Felletin. Aubusson was already known for its detailed pictorial tapestries, often depicting landscapes or hunting scenes. These were woven as wall hangings and displayed as fine art in elite residences.

The region’s weaving tradition has a long and complex history. Some legends trace its origins to the Saracens who remained in the area after the Battle of Tours. Later, skilled Huguenot weavers settled in Aubusson while fleeing religious persecution. Many of them were eventually forced into exile after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. As a result, the carpet trade in France rose and fell depending on political and religious conditions at the time.

What Makes an Aubusson Carpet Unique?

Many Aubusson carpets were created using a pileless tapestry technique, which is why the term “Aubusson carpet” often refers to flatwoven rugs. However, some pile carpets were also produced. Early designs were influenced by Oriental rugs, but over time the style evolved. Weavers began incorporating more floral patterns, scrolling vines, and architectural motifs, similar to those seen in Savonnerie carpets.

Aubusson Carpets Today

Today, the Aubusson style continues to influence rug production around the world. Weavers in countries such as India, Pakistan, and China produce rugs inspired by this classic European design. These rugs often feature the same elegant floral and architectural elements rooted in the Renaissance period. Unlike many other handwoven styles, Aubusson carpets reflect a distinctly French artistic tradition.

Caring for an Aubusson Carpet

If you own an Aubusson carpet, you have more than just a floor covering. You have a piece of history and a work of art. With proper care, it can remain a beautiful and valuable part of your home for years to come.

Instabind carpet remnant

Turn a Carpet Remnant into a Rug!

Our Instabind product has a number of creative uses our customers write to tell us about, including crafts, classic car restoration and even yacht remodeling, but the #1 use for Instabind is, of course, rug binding. It’s a great way to make a carpet remnant into an area rug. You don’t even have to be a carpeting professional to do it! Instabind makes rug binding into a fun weekend project for any DIYer or crafter.

Turn a Carpet into a Rug

How do you turn a carpet remnant into a rug? It’s simple.

Step 1

Assemble your tools. These will be a hot glue gun, scissors, and clear tape.

Step 2

Trim off any strings or irregularities along the sides of the carpet and make sure that its sides are straight. You may find using a carpet cutter and straight edge helps.

Step 3

Take the style of binding you’ve chosen to complement the carpet and make a clean cut. There are so many colors and styles of Instabind available, including:

We even sell an Instabind Starter Kit if you’d like to try your hand at carpet binding with a number of projects and styles. Our rule of thumb for selecting a binding is: if it’s a cotton or wool rug or carpet, use a natural (cotton) binding or serging style. If it’s a synthetic rug or carpet, use a synthetic binding or serging style. Of course, the highest quality look will still be the cotton one, but our synthetic binding will look great too.

Step 4

Pull back the paper on the binding and begin applying it to the carpet in the middle of one cut edge. Extend the Instabind past the corner of the carpet, and using the corner as a guide, snip the flat part of the Instabind, stopping at the piping. With the paper turned back, overlap the backing while rounding the corner. Continue around the carpet until you return to the beginning. You can readjust if necessary at this stage in the project. Using your starting point as a guide, make the finishing cut with your scissors and trim any excess strings.

Step 5

Seal the beginning and ending pieces of the Instabind together with a bead of hot glue. Now apply a ⅛” bead of hot glue between the edge of the Instabind and the carpet and hold in place a few minutes to let the glue set. Continue this process all the way around the carpet. For a more finished looking back, trim the Instabind backing at a 45 degree angle.

Step 6

Place your beautiful new bound piece of carpet in any place it complements your decor.

Transform Your Rug with Instabind

If you have a rug you’d like to repair, or a remnant piece of carpet that could serve as a rug, what are you waiting for? Using Instabind to transform either is much less expensive than the price of an area rug, even an inexpensive one, so what have you got to lose?

thank you to our customers

Thank You to Our Customers!

As Christmas 2024 approaches, we reflect on another year of challenges, perseverance, and blessings. The holiday season is a time to celebrate with loved ones, but it’s also an opportunity to pause and appreciate the year we’ve experienced together. Despite the challenges, we’ve come a long way in 2024—and for that, we owe a heartfelt “thank you” to you, our customers.

Your support reminds us why we do what we do, and we’re deeply grateful for the role you play in our success. One of our favorite things is hearing directly from you. Feedback like this review from Eileen Reali truly makes our day:

I contacted Bond products via email, with a question regarding their Instabind product. I received an almost instant reply from a very helpful and friendly customer service rep Mallory Heilman. I ended up emailing several questions which were all answered almost immediately. I told Mallory that she made my day by giving me the best customer service ever!

Finished project!
I’m adding my review for the Instabind™ Synthetic Serge Style Cactus Flower color. Our favorite rug was starting to fray and looked neglected. We brought it to a rug repair business to get an estimate on repair. They wanted $600 to repair the two 9foot frayed edges. We decided to fix it ourselves. I ordered the product and we finally got around to repairing the rug. We love it! I’m including before and after pictures. Thank you BOND PRODUCTS for having an excellent product as an alternative to expensive repairs.”

Bond Turf Tape

Bond Turf Tape: Clean, Quick and Strong

At Bond Products, we’ve been manufacturing and selling our no-mess, no-fume, high-temperature adhesive artificial turf seaming tape for almost two decades.  During that time, our Turf Tape has proven its reliability in several NFL stadiums – in our opinion one of the most strenuous and extreme seam environments on the planet! These are:

Bond Turf Tape

Our Turf Tape has also been used to seam and secure artificial turf in playgrounds, residential and commercial landscaping and golf practice facilities around the country.

After years of continued development and feedback from our customers, we believe the key benefits to using our easy-to-use adhesive seaming tape include:

  • Clean, simple installation process – no sticky mess, no ruined uniforms.
  • Odor-free bonding process – no caustic smell, no chemical fumes.
  • Efficient, green process – no two-part epoxy mix and the associated waste, no disposal of toxic byproducts.
  • Lightweight, compact deployment – minimal shipping charges and storage requirements
  • Significant labor cost savings

Because the glue is actually adhered to the back side of the tape and applied using a special high-temperature iron, there is absolutely nothing to mix or handle. This means no sticky mess to dry out your hands or stain and ruin uniforms.  The entire process is clean and simple. In addition, because there are no chemicals to activate, there is minimal to no odor (which is especially helpful for indoor applications).

The self-contained nature of the product makes it one of the greenest solutions on the market.  There is no by-product, no leftover waste that will end up in a landfill and pollute the environment.

Bond Turf Tape is lightweight and compact, making it inexpensive to ship and easy to transport to and from each job site.  It requires minimal storage space in the warehouse and on the work trucks, allowing more room for other equipment and supplies.

Probably the single most appealing benefit of our revolutionary turf seaming product is the reduction in labor, which results in significant cost savings. Whereas traditional seaming methods can take up to 15 minutes per linear yard or more (including mixing, set time and application), our tape can be applied at a rate of less than 5 minutes per linear yard.  That’s a 66% savings in the amount of time it takes to do the job.

Considering the fact that labor is generally the highest cost on an artificial turf installation or repair, it’s easy to see how Bond Turf Seaming Tape pays for itself exponentially.  Imagine seaming an entire field in ⅓ the time – that means an installer can complete 3 projects in the same amount of time.

The tape itself sets up immediately and is completely cured in a matter of 10-15 minutes, depending on the environment.  This quick set allows installers to move steadily without fear of shifting completed seams as they work their way across the field.

With a tensile strength of 385 psi and a yield strength of 400 psi, Bond Products Turf Tape creates one of the strongest seams on the market. Able to withstand the repeated pounding and pressure of 350 pound football linemen, our product continues to perform and hold, regardless of the conditions and/or wear and tear of its environment.

If you’re tired of the sticky mess, caustic odor, and hazardous waste associated with traditional turf seaming products, please take a minute to pick up the phone and call 800-888-BOND to learn more about our incredible turf seaming tape. We’d be happy to answer any questions and even send you a sample so you can see for yourself how clean, quick and strong our revolutionary seaming process is!

narrow fabrics

What Are Narrow Fabrics?

Bond Narrow Fabric Co. began as a distributor of “narrow fabrics” after the Milnes family had diversified from weaving carpets into producing narrow tapes for the military. Those outside the textile industry might wonder what exactly the term “narrow fabrics” includes. Here is a short explanation of the type of fabric we have made our life’s work.

What Exactly Are Narrow Fabrics?

By definition, narrow fabrics are “any non-elastic woven textile having a width of 12 inches or less and a woven selvage on either side.” They are small strips of fabric, often designed for a specific and practical purpose. Cords, braids, and lanyards are commonly used items that are also narrow fabrics. They are woven on special looms, including the recently developed quad axial loom which allows for for the insertion of yarn from four directions and makes both a thinner and stronger product than the traditional layered strips joined with Z fibers were.

Narrow fabrics were initially used in the garment industry on hats, corsets, and lingerie, and in military uniforms as well. Nowadays soldiers will also find them in their pack webbing and parachutes as well as their waist belts, helmets, and body armor.

If you pay attention to the everyday objects in your life, you will see this type of fabric everywhere, from the seat belts in your car, to the leash you walk your dog on, to the tough fabric edging on your mattress.

Medical Applications

Recently, as technology has advanced, narrow fabrics have been used to make 3D medical devices such as the woven bifurcate that is used to treat aortic abdominal aneurysms. The strong fabric device is threaded into place to support the artery and reduce the aneurysm. Eventually, as the patient heals, this device will become a part of the artery itself.

During a procedure used to replace damaged heart valves, a narrow fabric medical device is used to fish out any surgical debris after the new valves are in place. The future promises more such medical technology. Other commonly known narrow fabrics used in the healthcare industry include rigid gauze, bandages, and fiberglass bands.

And, of course, narrow fabrics are used to join carpet seams during installation, whether inside the house or on the football field. Our Instabind products, which are used to bind carpet pieces, are all aesthetically pleasing examples of narrow fabrics.

We at Bond Products are proud of the part we have played and continue to play in the U.S. textile industry. Narrow fabrics can be found almost anywhere and have a myriad of uses from everyday to high tech. So the next time you take your dog for a walk or admire the carpet in your living room, remember narrow fabrics!

The Sacred Cat Rug – an Ancient and Haunted Object

As the year gets longer and days get shorter, we all look forward to the holidays. In celebration of the spooky month of October and Halloween, we thought we’d tell you about another famous old rug. This one is not just ancient, it’s rumored to be haunted.

An Ancient Haunted Rug

sacred cat rug

The Sacred Cat rug is another contender for the claim of World’s Oldest Rug. It is believed to be 2,400 years old. This rug was taken from a pyramid or other archeological site, almost certainly stolen by treasure hunters. When it came into the possession of the last owner, Abraham S. Mussallem, it was wrapped around a mummified foot. If that’s not creepy enough, this rug was woven entirely from cat hair.

The ancient Egyptians viewed cats as sacred, and the penalties for injuring or killing a cat were severe, including being put to death. As an agrarian society, Egypt revered cats for their ability to control the vermin like mice and rats or poisonous snakes that often threatened their grain stores. To these Egyptians, cats were magical and could bring good luck. Some Egyptians dressed their cats in jewels and even mummified them when they died. Imagine the number of cats and the amount of cat hair that would have to be collected to weave an entire rug from it.

View the Sacred Cat Rug

Today the Sacred Cat Rug can be viewed in Villa Zorayda Museum in St. Augustine, Florida, along with the mummified (and jewel encrusted) foot it came with. Is the foot a warning? Legend has it that anyone who sets foot on this rug carelessly will die soon afterwards. It’s rumored that, during the rug’s last restoration, a dead cat was found on the front steps of the museum. Fortunately for all of us and the rug’s longevity, the rug is now kept safely behind glass on the second floor of the museum.

It’s unlikely that any of the area rugs in your house are haunted, and that’s a good thing! However, if any of your rugs need restoration or rebinding, Bond Products has everything anyone would need for the job – except for cat-hair Instabind. If your rug is woven from the cat hair of ancient Egyptian cats, you may be out of luck if you want a binding made of the same material. For everyone else looking for the binding equipment, rug fringe, thread, or Instabind necessary to turn a horror of a rug into a beauty, contact us today. We’d love to help.

Retail DIY Carpet Binding Opportunities

Due to spacing constraints, equipment expenses, and training challenges, many carpet retailers aren’t able to or choose not to offer binding services.  Though they are more than willing to cut and sell remnants to their customers, they don’t offer a way to properly finish the edges, which means they are missing out on profitable carpet binding opportunities.

Don’t Miss Out!

With the right planning and some diligent marketing efforts, carpet professionals who are able to operate professional binding equipment can potentially build a lucrative long-term business serving as the on-site outsourcing solution for these retailers.

The argument for the sales call is relatively simple and straightforward.  If a business offers remnants to their customers (which most will), but they don’t offer binding services on them, the customer will go elsewhere.

Our portable binding machines and binding/serging supplies allow anyone with the right training to become a traveling workshop able to turn what was once scrap into a solid revenue stream with significant profit potential.

Another Option: Instabind Carpet Binding

Instabind package deals

If money and space are the issue, Bond Products also offers a patented DIY Instabind tape that requires no initial investment and applies using only scissors and a hot glue gun. It’s available in many styles and colors and recently we added a nice retail package for retail display.

If you have any questions or would like some insight into how to uncover and pursue these carpet binding opportunities, don’t hesitate to call or contact us at Bond Products. We are dedicated to helping you succeed and would be more than happy to share our expertise and experience in this marketplace.

With a bag closer. Not all bag closers are created equally, though. You can find cheap bag closers online, but, as with so many other products, you get what you pay for in terms of quality, ease of use, and reliability.

Bond’s Portable Bag Closer

Our bag closer is a nice little machine, easy to hold and handle. It’s lightweight, simple to use, and requires little maintenance. It works on plain and folded top closures. This bag closer is designed to close bags made of many types of materials, including paper, burlap, cotton, linen, jute, and plastic. It can also close waterproofed materials.

This bag closer weighs only 12 pounds and is very durable. It’s built tough so that it can work all day long without issue. It operates using a 110 volt motor and an oil lubrication system. It only requires a little practice before the user can produce nice seams across bags of many types. It has a safe plastic handle and can be operated with only one hand, leaving the other free to maneuver the bag into place for closing.

The machine uses straight #25 needles, the same type of needle that the PBB 2×2 or 4×4 use. It sews 11/3 white poly cotton thread and requires two poly cotton threads to operate.

This closer is on track to be the world’s leading portable bag closer as it’s useful in so many settings: agriculture, transportation and shipping, business, and too many industries to list. It’s useful for initial packing, but it can also be used to close bags that have come open or repair damaged bags at the loading dock, in warehouse and railway stations, in post offices, or in grocery stores. If your business doesn’t ship product but receives product in bags for storage, this is a machine you need because there is always packaging that gets damaged in transit.

Call us at 1-888-800-BOND to learn more about Bond’s portable bag closer and how it can help make packing and shipping product a quick and easy process for your company. This is a great product, and we are happy to offer it to our customers.

rug grippers

Non-Slip Rug Pad Products Secure Your Rugs!

In our last blog we talked about how to keep an area rug from creeping on carpet. A bigger problem in the home, however, is rugs slipping on wood floors or other hard surfaces. It’s a safety issue because a slip-and-fall accident can result in an injury. Using rug grippers and non-slip rug pad products can stop your rugs from moving and lower the risk of injury in your home.

Slip-and-Fall Accidents Are a Common Cause of Injury

Everyone has had a slip-and-fall accident at least once, but more than a million Americans every year go to the emergency room because of an injury sustained during a slip-and-fall accident. This is a real problem. Slip and falls cause serious injury in 20-30% of cases. About 5% involve broken bones. Falls are the leading cause of brain injury and hip fracture, and one-third of adults age 65 or older fall annually.

Of course, not all of those slip-and-fall accidents involve rugs, but every one involving an unsecured rug is preventable if you use the right products. Bond Products offers a variety of rug backing products for our customers to choose from

Rug Grippers and Non-Slip Rug Pad Products

The first type of anti-slip product is TRACTIONBACK Secondary Felt, Double-Grip rubber backing. This product is attached by latex or spray gluing as a secondary backing using either side: felt side down if laying on carpet, or rubber side down if non-skid on a hard surface is needed.

Another products is LOK-LIFT Rug Gripper which can be cut into strips and attached to the outline of the rug on its underside to keep it from moving. LOK-LIFT is safe for all floor surfaces.

We also offer two non-slip rug pad products, Eco-Grip and Eco-Stay. These rug pads can be purchased to match the dimensions of your rug and cut down to size you need. Rug pads also provide cushioning underneath and make standing or walking on your rug more comfortable.

Put Them to the Test

To make sure your rug product has been applied correctly and is working, lay the rug on the floor where you want it and test it. Push it with your foot, applying pressure and trying to move it forth side to side or back and forth. If the rug doesn’t move, great! You’ve just increased the safety of the room environment. If it does move, check the directions and make sure you’ve applied the backing product correctly.

Some products will work more successfully with certain floor types. If you have any questions about which rug grippers or non-slip rug pad products would work best for your rug, don’t hesitate to call Bond Products’ customer service professionals at 1-888-800-BOND. We will be glad to help you choose the right one.

How thick is carpet binding tape

How Thick Is Carpet Binding Tape?

We have answered many carpet binding questions on this blog over the years. Here’s another common one: How thick is carpet binding tape? Let’s talk about binding tape thickness and what people need to know about carpet binding

A Quick Refresher:

Carpet binding tape is tape that is used to bind the edges of carpets, area rugs, runners, and staircases to make them more attractive and prevent them from fraying or unraveling.

People use binding tape for a number of purposes besides binding carpet or turning a remnant into a rug, including crafts, home decor, and, most recently, making face masks. They are useful for these purposes because binding tape comes in a number of fabric types as well as a large variety of colors, so it’s easy to match or complement the fabric or material you are binding it to.

Binding tape is attached to carpet by either hot glue, stapling, or sewing. Instabind is attached with hot glue and is typically used for smaller DIY rug projects. It comes in regular, cotton binding, faux leather, synthetic serge, cotton serge, rope edge, outdoor marine, and safety edge varieties.

How Thick Is Carpet Binding Tape?

Binding tape that is used to bind carpets with carpet binding machines comes in a number of thicknesses, but the most common are ⅞ and 1¼ inches. The thicker the carpet or rug being bound, the thicker the binding tape has to be to cover the edge. Bond Products sells binding tape in these thicknesses:

These tapes are available in a full spectrum of colors to match whatever kind of carpet is on the market for sale.

During the carpet binding process, the carpet will be cut down to the desired shape. It may also be beveled and tapered toward the edges. This will affect how wide the binding tape has to be and make the tape lie neatly at the edges.

Bond Products also has carpet binding equipment for sale as well as other quality equipment, including sergers, cutters, bevelers, and machine package deals. If you have further questions about binding tape thickness or need anything, call us at 1-888-800-BOND. We will be glad to help you.
