Tips on Area Rug Placement

Bond Products’ motto has always been “Every hard floor needs a nice area rug.” Rugs are the products we’ve built our business around, and our product line is devoted to maintaining and improving all types of rugs. An attractive area rug can be the making of a room, pulling a number of disparate elements – furniture, pictures, and architectural details like a fireplace or large window – together in a harmonious way. How do you decide where to place your rug, though, once you’ve found the perfect one?

The general rule of thumb for positioning rugs on hardwood floors is to leave a space of at least 8 inches between the rug and the four walls. That is for rugs meant to cover an entire floor, and it means that in a 10’x14’ room, a proper sized rug would be 8’x10’ or smaller. The empty floor space acts as a sort of frame for the rug. It would be easy to stick to this rule of thumb if all rooms were of a standard size, but they aren’t. For smaller or narrower rooms, it works better to allow less space, maintaining the appearance of the “frame,” just scaling it down to fit the smaller “painting.” For large rooms more space would also be appropriate.

For very large rooms, more than one area rug is often used to fill the space up. These can be identical patterns of different sizes or they can be individual rugs selected to highlight different features of the room or arrange them in groups: two sofas or a piano and an armchair. Custom rugs can also be made and bound to fit a room. If the rugs are to be scattered about a room, avoid placing any of them in an area where the corner of the rug will be in the path of traffic. It will be a tripping hazard, even if you take steps to keep it from slipping or moving.

Be aware of the practical details of the room when choosing or placing a rug. You may create an amazing arrangement of sofa and armchairs on a rug only to find you’ve covered a floor vent or there is no electrical outlet nearby to use. If a window lets in a great deal of sun, avoid placing the rug away where it might become faded over time. Keep an eye on traffic patterns too and do not select light colored rugs for those spaces. You will not want to have your carpets professionally cleaned every other week to keep them looking nice when placing them a few feet the right or left would avoid the buildup of dirt in the first place.

There are so many good design sites for people interested in home decorating. If you are looking for ideas for your home, take some time to check out all the options before you decide to buy a specific rug or piece of furniture. You might be inspired to create something completely unique!
