What Do You Need to Install Artificial Turf?

We’ve talked before about why people are choosing to install artificial grass and where they’re choosing to install it. In this blog post we’ll talk about what you need to put down a useful, attractive piece of artificial turf that will stay put and look great for years.

First of all, it helps to understand how turf is made and what it’s constructed of so that you will not be tempted to skip steps or use the wrong materials. Artificial turf is an investment. It costs a significant amount of money to put in, but then after that, unlike a lawn that needs to be watered, fertilized, and mowed, it’s free. So what is artificial turf?

The Synthetic Turf Council describes artificial turf as “a grass-like ground cover that replicates natural grass.” It is composed of synthetic filaments of nylon, polyethylene, or polypropylene threaded through a backing that is designed to let water through. There are many types of artificial grass and these vary in appearance and quality, but these mimic the types of grasses that grow in different geographical areas.

The first step of installation is to choose an area and then remove all plant material from it. Whether you break up the ground with a tiller or use a sod cutter, look at the job this way: any seeds you leave behind in that dirt may find away through your artificial grass and cause problems later on. Be thorough and then wait for a few days to make sure you got everything.

Step number two is adding crushed aggregate over the area, two to four inches thick. This will help any rain that falls not to pool on the turf but to drain quickly and efficiently. Make sure this layer is level with the ground surrounding it. After this install a 15- to 25-year weed barrier over the aggregate. You want one that will hold up over time because, as Jurassic Park taught all of us, “Nature finds a way.”

You’ll also need a carpet knife or box cutter to cut the turf you’ve chosen. The trickiest part of the installation is making sure that the seams match up so it looks like all one lawn. Bond Products offers a variety of products to make that easier, including turf tape, turf seaming irons, and even a turf seam sewing machine. You will also need 6-inch galvanized nails in order to attach the turf solidly to the ground.

Once you have your turf seamed and attached, the job is nearly done. You will have to apply an infill material that will keep the turf down and flat and then brush it over with a broom in order to make sure the entire backing is covered.

It may sound complicated, but with the right tools, most homeowners can handle the installation of their own artificial turf. As with any job, the key is to have the right equipment, a quality product, and patience with every step.

Good luck with your artificial turf project. Don’t hesitate to call Bond Products if we can help in any way!
